I have never lived
together with this other 'brother' of mine, who was born in 1988, but
that doesn't mean I loved him less. Taking care of him during the holidays and
seeing him grow up as if he was my own cat, made me feel he was partly mine.
Bessie has
always been a playful cat. Bringing little paper balls back to my dad and
waiting till he threw them away again. Just like a dog.
Together with Kootjes help he knew at a certain moment how to open the fridge, with all
consequences connected: us coming home finding all the food half eaten on the floor... Even though he was an inside cat, he didn't betray his nature: once he caught a pigeon on the balcony, bringing him in and leaving a trace of little white feathers everywhere. He also always warned my parents when Kootje was locked in somewhere. After Kootje died, Bessie became a little lazier. In the beginning it looked like he searched for his dear pal. He reacted for quite some time when my mother said Kootjes name. Like he was looking for him too. Was there still a memory, or was it just the intonation of her voice? |

Bessie stayed full of life till the end, but his little body didn't manage anymore. In the morning of the 12th of June 2006 his heart stopped beating. You can read an 'in memoriam' here. |
